Last night I went along to Fantastic Voyages, a discussion on writing speculative fiction by Tim Jones and Helen Lowe, chaired by Lynn Freeman. The good news for those of you not able to be there is that I managed to record the event, and despite my complete lack of experience with audio, it seems to have turned out well. Check it out here - you can either listen online or download as an MP3.
The discussion covered a wide range of bases, from the basic definition of speculative fiction to the challenges of being published, both here and overseas. For me, the key point was how blurred the boundaries between speculative and literary fiction can be, and more importantly the growing acknowledgement of it (as someone who reads and writes both, I get very frustrated at some people who seem to think we need to chose sides). I'd really recommend listening to the recording - I found it both interesting and encouraging.

Thanks for putting this up.

Anna--may I add my thanks to
Anna--may I add my thanks to Tim Jones' for bringing along the digital recorder and making the podcast happen. We both really appreciate your doing this. And I am glad you found the evening encouraging as well as interesting. For me, there is just no down side to encouraging people to either get involved or keep going with speculative fiction, whether as readers or writers. And like you, I don't think what we chose to read or write should ever be a matter of taking sides--isn't that just so last millenium?!
